Wednesday - first day alone in Cairo.
I headed out of the hostel at around 10 am with the plan that I was going to walk to the island in the center of the Nile to see the ritzy area known as Zamalek. The streets were crowded, the day was hot, and I didn't feel like getting lost and wasn't sure what there was to see in Zamalek, so I turned around and headed for the Nile. 10:30 is apparently still part of rush hour, because not only were the streets filled with honking horns, and the sidewalks clogged with pedestrians, beggars, and street vendors, the cafe's were also full of people getting their morning breakfast of coffee, bread, and cheese. I took the main road of Talaat Harb for most of the walk to the Nile. It is almost 100% shopping, with glass fronted store windows lined up one after another with shoes, jewelry, and clothing. In particular, the windows of the clothing stores are at least 15' high and display at least 20 outfits on silvery mannequins.*The Semiramis Intercontinental was my first destination, both to use the facilities and to find out about seeing Dina, a very famous dancer, perform. After I made those arrangements I headed to the Corniche to walk along the Nile.
